News Links: Latino dance, art + tilting at windmills

“Las aventuras de Don Quijote de La Mancha,” the tale of the would-be knight and his loyal sidekick, Sancho Panza, received an Editor’s Pick by the Washington Post. It is running at GALA Hispanic Theatre on March 23, March 27 and March 28.

Spanish artist Narciso Maisterra’s exhibition titled, “Passing Through the Body Without Staying,” is on display at Hillyer Art Space. According to the Washington Post, the pastels document his return to making art after a debilitating yet transformative illness.

El Tiempo Latino posted an article about the art exhibition, “On Common Ground: Dominican Republic and Haiti” at the Art Museum of the Americas until May 26. The show focuses on displaying the complex- and often misunderstood- relationship between both areas. Hola Cultura’s story when the show opened that talks about how artists are bridging societal divides on the  the Caribbean island of Hispaniola that the two countries share.

Thomas Edison High School won the Latin dance contest earlier this month at Dominion High School in Virginia. About 200 students from nine high schools participated, El Tiempo Latino reported.

El Tiempo Latino and Washington Hispanic featured several pieces about talented local mixed-heritage Latino youths.

  • An 18-year-old with Bolivian and Japanese heritage is the Gold Key award winner of a Virginia art program for her sculpture “Escape.”
  • A 20-year-old sports reporter gave an in-depth description of her heritage and the effects it has had on her switch from fashion designing to reporting.
  • A baker described how her Argentinian culture influenced her to create Tango Pastry in Alexandria.
  • A 5-year-old from Virginia took part in a singing competition on the popular television show Sábado Gigante, and tied for first place.

NPR alt.Latino station hosts posted YouTube links to popular music from Mexico City’s Vive Latino festival. The site also featured a history and clip of Mexitrónica music.
