What East Boston's COVID story tells us about today
This spring, Hola Cultura interns Melody Marichalar and Marvin Juarez interviewed nearly a dozen East Boston residents and nonprofit leaders about COVID-19's lasting impact on the neighborhood. Along the way, they kept hearing something unexpected: many residents say today's fear and uncertainty, driven by ICE raids and economic pressure, feels like an echo of those pandemic years. On July 8, Melody and Marvin shared their insights from these conversations during a virtual event.
About the Project
When COVID-19 took hold in 2020, East Boston quickly emerged as one of the hardest hit neighborhoods in the state. Have you lost someone? A friend, a family member or perhaps a neighbor? Please share their story by answering a few questions. We plan to share these tributes via social media and an outdoor event later this year.

Cuando Covid-19 se afianzó en 2020, East Boston emergió rápidamente como uno de los vecindarios más afectados del estado. Dado que en 2025 se cumplen cinco años desde que comenzó la pandemia, este proyecto busca rendir homenaje a los miembros de la comunidad que perdieron la vida en la pandemia.
