Latinas run this weekend to help young women go to college

LLTraceThis Saturday more than 200 runners will hit the streets in Arlington for a road race to support programs that help young Washington-area Latinas get into college.

All proceeds from Latinas Leading Tomorrow’s Second Annual 5k Run and 1-Mile Kids Dash will go to the nonprofit organization’s free tutoring and mentoring programs for Latina middle schoolers and high school students.

The all-volunteer group has already helped more than 200 area Latinas ranging from age eleven to eighteen. Besides assisting them to excel in school, the group pairs girls who want to go to college with Latina professionals who serve as mentors. Many of the young women the group helps are the first in their families to go to college.

The adult 5K race begins at 8 a.m. with the shorter kids race starting 15 minutes later at the Bluemount Park Trail, 601 North Manchester Street, Arlington. Everyone is invited to the post race party kicking off about 11:30 a.m. with music and family activities, plus fitness, nutrition, health screenings, and chiropractic services.
