Latin American Song Festival

LASFThe Pan American Symphony Orchestra has launched its new season with a Latin American song series. The concerts taking place around the Washington area include tangos, nueva canción and boleros. Festivities kicked off last week but there are still several performances left.

Here’s the lowdown:

 

Dani Cortaza Brazilian Jazz Quintet

This concert will feature traditional tangos by Carlos Gardel, nuevo tango by Astor Piazzolla, as well as modern tangos. Performing with PASO will be Argentine vocalist Alejandra Leni joins PASO and Latin Grammy winning pianist, Octavio Brunetti.

Sofia Rei’s Trio

Versatile vocalist Sofía Rei performs traditional South American rhythms that merge jazz harmonies, electronic sounds, and rich improvisations.

Tangolandó

“A meeting of tango and Afro-Peruvian music” by musicians led by Sofia Tosello, who has been called a young Celia Cruz.

Canciones de mi Gente

The festival will finish with “a lyrical flourish” provided by singers performing the boleros, valzes, and sambas that highlight the variety of song styles. Performers include Chilean tenor Mauricio Miranda, a Domingo-Cafritz Opera Young Artist, Sofia Rei, and Trio Caliente.
