Interview with the Washington School of Ballet’s Xiomara Reyes

By | Published | No Comments

While ballet may not be known for its diversity, the Washington School of Ballet strives to train young dancers who looks more like the city’s population. Since 1999, nearly 1,000 students from under-privileged Washington D.C. neighborhoods participate each year in an education and outreach program called DanceDC.

Last fall the school’s diversity efforts received a major boost when renowned Cuban-born ballerina Xiomara Reyes joined its faculty as the Head of the Washington School of Ballet. At the time, the Ballet’s Artistic Director Julie Kent praised Reyes as a leader who would prioritize and exemplify diversity.

With the Washington School of Ballet’s annual Spring Showcase taking place this coming weekend, we interviewed Reyes about the universality of dance and why she loves training the next generation of dancers.
