We happily address you, today and always, in the spirit of openness and objectivity here at your casa online. We’d like to share our plans and small but necessary changes that will allow us to keep going in these difficult times. Only by working together and supporting each other, can Hola Cultura continue our mission of creating pathways to success for Latino youth by celebrating the diversity and contributions of Latino culture to our D.C. community.
This winter, we are happy to report, we will keep bringing you the best of D.C.’s Latino arts and humanities. With help from our stellar team of interns and volunteer writers, photographers and videographers, we’ll publish an average of three original posts each week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Each Monday and Friday, we’ll post a new interview, article or review, while Wednesdays are reserved for “Latino Links” event listings—our top picks for going-out in the week ahead curated for especially for all of us who love D.C.’s unique Latino culture. Drop by regularly and let us help you find out more about the many artists, chefs, exhibitions, performances, and lectures that make the Washington area such a great place to enjoy Latino arts.

Right now we are also working on an important special research project exploring the many Latin American indigenous languages spoken in the Washington D.C. area. From Mexico to Patagonia, Latin America is home to nearly 100 indigenous language families and hundreds of dialects. Many are found locally, as well, having migrated to the area along with members of our culturally rich and diverse Latino community.
We are looking to interview individuals who speak indigenous languages and also need volunteers interested in helping us collect these oral histories. If you would like to collaborate on this project, please contact us at holacultura@gmail.com. Whether you speak one of these languages of ancient America, know someone who does or just want to help out, we’d love to hear from you.
Since Hola Cultura—and perhaps all forms of culture—is about conversation and dialogue, we’d also like to let you know about another change we’re making this winter. As you know, we are facing a funding shortfall. In order to continue working, we are tightening our figurative belt but without reducing our work, our role in the community, or our contributions to local Latino culture and Hispanic heritage present here in the District of Columbia. As a cost-cutting measure, we’re canceling our telephone line to reduce our monthly overhead. But you can still reach us via email at holacultura@gmail.com. We invite you to share your opinions in the comments section of this site too.
We’ve been very lucky at Hola Cultura and are grateful to have such a positive impact on the Latino community in D.C. We are a small organization with a largely volunteer staff and limited budget. Any donation that you can make will be a tremendous help, allowing us to continue our vital work empowering youth and lifting up the voices of DC’s Latino community. Hola estimadísimos lectores, un saludo y un abrazo en este mes de la amistad y el amor.
Como siempre, felices de dirigirnos a ustedes en el más puro espíritu de apertura y objetividad en esta su casa. En esta ocasión, para informar una serie de pequeños cambios que se hacen necesarios para poder seguir funcionando en estos tiempos difíciles, sin que por eso merme nuestro trabajo, nuestra función en la comunidad y nuestra aportación a la cultura latina, la herencia hispana y la presencia de nosotros aquí en el distrito.
Entre los cambios previstos, están el de cancelar el teléfono al que ustedes se han dirigido muy amablemente todos estos años, por cuestiones sencillamente económicas, aunque eso no quiere decir que no podrán dirigirse a nosotros, dado que sus opiniones y sus comentarios son importantes. Podrán hacerlo directamente en el sitio, o a través del email, qué es casi lo mismo, aunque sin audio, un poco más corto quizá también, pero sin quitar la candidez y el cariño que se necesita para una buena comunicación.
Como siempre, continuaremos publicando tres veces a la semana. Los miércoles los listings que a todos gustan, pues nos ayudan a decidir en torno a la oferta cultural; el que ver, el que oír y si les gusta bailar también. El lunes y el viernes publicaremos notas originales de nuestros reporteros e interns que colaboran con nosotros amablemente para llevarles a ustedes información verídica, objetiva e importante. Por cierto, ahora mismo contamos con un muy buen grupo de jóvenes que se han alineado con nosotros trabajando en diferentes áreas para hacer de la cultura lo que siempre ha sido: la casa de los latinos.
Summer Interns, Verano 2016
Dicho sea de paso, ahora mismo nos encontramos trabajando en un importante proyecto sobre los lenguajes indígenas en el distrito de DC. Sí, escuchó bien, lenguajes como el nahuatl, como el maya y como otros importantes idiomas que también se hablan aquí en nuestra ciudad y que son traídos desde tierras muy lejanas. Si ustedes quieren colaborar en este proyecto, comuníquense con nosotros; ya sea que usted hable y escriba algunos de estos lenguajes, o sólo conozca a alguien que practique alguno de estos idiomas de la antigua América.
Una cosa más, ayúdenos a seguir funcionando, denos su donación, todavía es tiempo. Recuerde que todas sus donaciones son deducibles de impuestos y nos ayudan mucho a nosotros para seguir cubriendo la noticia y para seguir haciendo proyectos que son importantes, o lo que es lo mismo, para continuar poniéndole tabiques a este su hogar, su casa, misma que debe sostenerse para los vientos y las lluvias que amenazan.
