The Washington Post had a lengthy article this weekend on GALA Hispanic Theater’s premiere of its adaptation of Isabel Allende’s “La Casa de los Espíritus.” The play opened last week and runs through March. More information is available on the Gala website.

Novelist Judy Blume recently released a book about mysterious Spanish fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga. This article features an interview with her, and NPR published both an article about Balenciaga, as well as an excerpt from Blume’s book.

Virginia Senate Education Committee members rejected the local DREAM Act last week. This proposal would have allowed  undocumented youth, who had entered the country before age 16, and who had lived in Virginia for the past five years, to attend community colleges and universities if they paid resident fees.  Another article, however, suggests  there is hope for the bill in next year’s session, if certain fiscal concerns are resolved.

The acclaimed Spanish writer Antonio Munoz Molina says he will accept an Israeli award given to authors who write about human freedom. However, a group of activists, famous artists and authors including Alice Walker, Ken Loach and Roger Water have asked him to not to accept the award and boycott the Jewish state.

Colombian sensation Juanes will perform at Grammys on Sunday. In this article, Juanes, nominated for his new album “MTV Unplugged” in the Best Latin Pop Album category, discusses the Grammys in the Schools program, which promotes music education in high schools.
