Karlisima exhibits at the Potter’s House

KarlaRodasD.C. artist “Karlisima,” who we featured last year in our webumentary on DC’s Latino murals, has a new exhibition, Green Cathedrals:  Trees, Roots and Branches, up now at the Potter’s House in Adams Morgan.

According to the announcement:

“Her paintings are reminiscent of stained glass windows and mosaics infused with deep spiritual meaning, intertwining the worlds of the real and the surreal.  She focuses primarily on symbols of Mother Nature and her native Mayan roots. An interest in the symbolic meaning of votive candles, which she has seen in medieval and renaissance European cathedrals, is also present in her work.  Her paintings are alive with bright, expressive colors. The strong contrasts and bold brushstrokes remind one of impressionist painters and the surrealist work of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.”

The work will be on display at the cafe, bookstore and community space through July 31. Karlisima will give a couple of artist talks about the work later this month.
