Sidewalk Stories: Voices from East Boston graphic, “The Voice Above the Roar"

Today, enjoy the final installment of Hola Cultura’s “Sidewalk Stories,” made in partnership with the Boston Research Center (BRC). In this 5-minute compilation of interviews with residents throughout the years, learn about how neighborhood residents have stood up repeatedly to advocate for their neighborhood and about the East Boston Community News, an activist newspaper published biweekly for nearly two decades until it closed in 1989. The paper’s motto, “The voice above the roar,” inspired the title for this final audio program of our “Sidewalk Stories” trilogy.

In this program, hear from William Ferullo, Philip Giffee, Renée Loth, Liliana Tirado Arteaga and Kannan Thiruvengadam.

Find all three programs in this series on the “Sidewalk Stories” page, along with the transcripts in English and Spanish!

Funded by the Mellon Foundation and led by the Boston Research Center, “Sidewalk Stories” aims to promote greater understanding of Boston’s spatial, environmental and cultural history.  Project partners also include Zumix, Maverick Landing Community Services and the East Boston Social Centers. The entire “Sidewalk Stories” collection will soon be available on the BRC’s Our Home: An East Boston History Portal.
