Hola Cultura relies on interns, fellows and volunteers to help us celebrate D.C.’s Latine arts, humanities and cultural life and report on issues of importance to the entire community. Over the course of a decade, we’ve worked with hundreds of high school, college and graduate students, as well as young professionals looking to build professional skills while serving the community.
SPEL Boston Opportunities-Tide Talks
Hola Cultura is seeking an editorial fellow and four editorial interns for an East Boston-based storytelling project focused on the impacts of climate change and gentrification on neighborhood residents. The program will run from January 20 to April 30, 2025. These positions are only open to Boston-area residents and combine both remote and on-site work.
Editorial Fellow-Boston
As our first Boston-based Editorial Fellow, you will lead a team of 3-4 interns and volunteers in a storytelling project focusing on climate change, environmental justice and gentrification. During Tuesday story lab sessions and monthly in-person meetings, you will have opportunities to mentor your team, conduct interviews and work together to produce and publish articles, podcasts or other media. You should have a bachelor’s or graduate degree in journalism, communications or a related field.
Editorial Intern-Boston
As an Editorial Intern on our first Boston-based team, you will participate in a storytelling project focusing on climate change, environmental justice and gentrification. During Tuesday story lab sessions and monthly in-person meetings, you and your team will conduct interviews and work together to produce and publish articles, podcasts or other media. The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in pursuing a career in journalism, documentary-making, podcasting or a related communications field.
SPEL Opportunities
We recruit for our online Storytelling Program for Experiential Learning (SPEL) program three times a year (spring, summer and fall). The 2025 spring semester will run from January 28 to April 29. SPEL meets remotely every Tuesday for professional development trainings and collaborative story lab time. To be considered, you must be available for these weekly Zoom meetings. Currently, SPEL has the following storytelling teams: Arts & Humanities and Society & Culture and a Copy Editing team. Editorial Fellow
As an Editorial Fellow, you will lead a team of 3-5 interns and volunteers. Throughout the semester, you will work with your team to plan, produce and publish new stories and/or podcasts. During Tuesday’s story lab, you will have opportunities to brainstorm stories, conduct interviews and research, mentor your team and assist them as they produce original journalism for our online readers and podcast listeners. You should have a bachelor’s or graduate degree in journalism, communications or a related field.
Editorial Intern
As an Editorial Intern, you will be part of a storytelling team focusing on topic areas, such as D.C. area arts and humanities and Latine cultural initiatives, social and environmental justice, the Afro-Latino Experience and more. During story lab, you and your team will conduct interviews and work together to produce and publish articles, investigative reports, podcasts and other media. You should have a strong interest in pursuing a career in journalism or a related communication field.
Social Media Intern
As a Social Media Intern, you will be assigned to one of our storytelling groups (Arts & Humanities and Society & Culture) and lead social media planning, posting and management for the stories your team produces. Working closely with Hola Cultura’s social media staff, you will help not only promote the stories of your fellow SPEL interns, you will also be part of our fast-paced social media team promoting all of our stories, podcasts, community events and more. You should ideally have work experience or a strong interest in pursuing a career in social media, marketing, journalism, nonprofit communication or a related field.
Copy Editing Intern
As a Copy Editing Intern, you will be part of a team that edits all of the stories produced by SPEL participants. After receiving a rapid training workshop from professional journalists specialized in this key editorial skill, you will receive hands-on experience editing new stories each week. Working in a team, you will hone your editing skills and have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the roles and responsibilities of copy editors as you build a portfolio of published work that you’ve edited. You should have experience or a strong interest in pursuing a career in journalism or a related communications field. Familiarity with AP Style is a plus.

Hola Cultura Opportunities
Non-Profit Administration Fellow
As a Non-Profit Administration Fellow, you will assist Hola Cultura’s staff and volunteers with organizational operations and administrative tasks, along with the recruitment and management of our SPEL program. You will get involved in Hola Cultura’s day-to-day activities, learning and gaining hands-on experience with a range of activities associated with operating a nonprofit organization.
GIS Intern
As a GIS Intern, you will participate in an investigative journalism project examining DC’s tree canopy. You will work in a fast-paced, intergenerational team producing interactive maps, articles and podcasts. This position is only open to graduate students in a PhD or masters program at the University of Maryland. The program will run from September to December 2024. A minimum of 10 hours a week is required.
