Mexican-American documentary photographer Natalie Camou spent two years with a family of African immigrants living in Spain.
In her work United States of Mind, Natalie Camou seeks to disrupt the politically useful binary of the “good immigrant” versus the “bad immigrant.” Through her photography, Camou explores the dimensions of immigrant experience, to show the complexity of networks, families, and individuals impossible to filter through values of “good” and “bad.” An exhibition combining photos and sound clips from recorded interviews that explore the dimensions of immigrant experience in Europe. The powerful photographs that resulted from the experience are up now at the Former Spanish Ambassador’s Residence, 2801 16th St NW, as part of FotoWeek DC.
Hola Cultura interviewed her about the exhibition, United States of Mind, and her interest in exploring how immigration impacts one’s sense of identity.
