Juan Felipe Herrera is the Poet Laureate of the United States. He is the first Latino to receive the honor.
The son of migrant farm workers, Herrera was educated at UCLA and Stanford University, and he earned his MFA from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. His numerous poetry collections include: 187 Reasons Mexicanos Can’t Cross the Border, Half of the World in Light, Border-Crosser with a Lamborghini Dream, Laughing Out Loud – I Fly, and Cinnamon Girl: Letters Found Inside a Cereal Box.
“Almost Livin’ Almost Dyin’” is a beautiful piece of literature about the police brutality in the US, specifically the case of Michael Brown, who died in police custody.
