This Saturday afternoon artists will get together to discuss the exhibition up now at the Corcoran College of Art + Design that showcases art that breaks the confines of formal spaces such as museums to take art directly to the people. Saturday’s speakers include Domènec Monsterrat from Barcelona, and Javier Toscano from Mexico City, as well as several local artists.
The Corcoran describes the collective show, “This Is Not a Museum: Portable and Lurking/Esto no es un museo. Artefactos móviles al acecho,” as a roundup of “nomadic exhibitions” from cities around the globe. Not only does it subvert “the logic of the museum,” it invites the viewer to be more than just an audience, or as the Corcoran puts it: it’s art “as a platform for direct participation.”And there’s a connection to the wonderful surrealist Marcel Duchamp: According to the announcement, “Since Marcel Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise (1941), many artists have tried to move the field of aesthetic experience beyond the limits of the museum. In recent years, museums have co-opted this strategy with devices intended to make art ‘portable.’”
The conference, running from 1 to 5 p.m., marks the closing of the exhibition, as well.
