This year we had a fantastic team of summer interns. Besides learning more about our summer research areas: indigenous languages, Latino murals and gentrification in the District, they enjoyed helping us cover arts and cultural events for Hola Cultura’s website and social media. The experience not only allowed them to learn more about the area’s Latino communities and cultural scene, but also to meet new people and network. Here’s what that had to say in their own words:

I loved going to the events. It was fun attending and writing about them. I enjoyed the research project too. It was great to learn new information, interview experts and present my hard work. I also enjoyed the constant meetings … that helped us get to know each other and work well together —Rebecca Toro, an undergraduate who attends West Virginia University

Next Monday, July 31, read Rebecca Toro’s dispatches about affordable housing in the District and why rent control has played an important role in helping some low-income Latino residents keep their D.C. homes. Drop by next week to read about the trends shaping the District’s changing neighborhoods, proposed changes to the city’s rent control laws, and government efforts to crack down on slumlords, plus promising new developments in the multiyear fight by predominantly Latino tenants at one Columbia Heights building.
The following week, to coincide with the United Nations’ International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on Aug. 9, we’ll share the highlights from our “Beyond Español” oral history project celebrating the local presence of native languages and cultures of Mexico, Central and South America.
Later in August, read about our progress in expanding our research and online map of Latino murals in D.C. We’ll have interviews, photos, videos and articles chronicling the history of mural making in Washington’s Latino community and introducing today’s new generation of Latino muralists. We will continue sharing new work on the murals in the lead up to our September presentation on the D.C. Latino Murals Guided Tour we’re working on.

Este años tuvimos un equipo de practicantes fantástico. Además de aprender más a cerca de nuestras áreas de investigación este verano: lenguas indígenas, murales Latinos y la vivienda asequible en el Distrito, ellas dijeron que también disfrutaron el poder cubrir eventos artísticos y culturales para el sitio web y redes sociales de Hola Cultura. Oportunidades las cuales no solo les permitió aprender más acerca de las comunidades Latinas y aspectos culturales del área, si no que también conocer a gente nueva.

La próxima semana empezaremos a publicar todo el trabajo maravilloso que ellas hicieron este verano.
El próximo lunes, 31 de julio, lee la información de Rebecca Todo acerca de vivienda asequible en el Distrito y porque el control de renta ha jugado un papel importante en ayudando a algunos residentes Latinos de bajos ingresos mantener sus casas en D.C. Échale un vistazo a la pagina la próxima semana para leer acerca de las tendencias que están ocurriendo en los vecindarios que están cambiando en el Distrito, cambios que han sido propuestos a las leyes de control de renta en la ciudad y a los esfuerzos del gobierno para mejorar la situación entre dueños no deseados. También hay nuevos desarrollos prometedores in la pelea de varios años predominantemente por aquilinos Latinos en un edificio de Columbia Heights.
Para coincidir con el Día Internacional de los Pueblos Indígenas, la próximas semana el 9 de agosto compartiremos información de nuestro proyecto de historia oral “Más allá del español” el cual celebra la presencia local de las culturas e idiomas de México, Centro y Sur América.
A fines de agosto lea acerca de nuestro proyecto en expandir nuestra investigación y mapa por internet de los murales Latinos en D.C. Tendremos entrevistas, fotos, videos y más que narra la historia del arte en forma de murales en la comunidad Latina de Washington y también perfiles de la generación de hoy en día de muralistas Latinos. Continuaremos compartiendo trabajo nuevo el cual nos guiara a nuestra presentación en septiembre a cerca de el recorrido guiado que estamos construyendo de murales Latinos en D.C.
