La Rosa (English version below)
Tus pétalos –como aquellos que se reúnen alrededor de ti en el
día de tu santo
tu estigma y estambre –como las velas encendidas en tu pastel
de cumpleaños
que nos unen – tu inflorescencia
y ahora tus semillas –tu querida misma alma
caen y vuelan, caen y navegan
con la esperanza de florecer de nuevo como flores
hermosas
haciendo realidad las mismas palabras que hoy te cantamos,
El día en que tú naciste nacieron todas las flores
The Rose
Your petals –like those who gather round you on your saint’s day
your stigma and stamen – like the candles ablaze on your
birthday cake
that make all us become one – your inflorescence
and now your seeds –your dear and very soul
fall and fly, fall and sail away
to hopefully someday bloom again as other lovely flowers
making true the very words we sing to you today,
The day you were born all the flowers were born

La Mano
Por la mañana llegué a mi clase de primer grado
sin saber nada de inglés
al medio día me azotó la maestra
por hablar español afuera, en el patio de recreo
por la noche me arrodillé y le pedí al señor
que me protegiera de ese mundo de miedo y peligro de la
escuela
The Hand
In the morning I arrived at my first-grade class
knowing no English
at noon I got smacked by the teacher
for speaking Spanish outside, in the playground
at night I knelt and prayed to the Lord
to protect me from that very scary and dangerous school world
