Sangre Inédita is a heavy metal band formed in 2014 in the D.C. area by musicians from around Latin America. Chato López, from Guatemala, is the lead singer and bass player. Oswaldo Urrutia, from El Salvador,  and Bryan Alomoto, from Ecuador, both play guitar, while Fabio Terán, the drummer, comes from Bolivia.

We spoke with Chato López about the band and the EP (short for extended play recording) the band will release later this year.

Tell us about how you guys met and started playing together.

We formed the band on July 2014, we started on a hall where we got together to make our own first songs, then we shaped them into what we like to play, Heavy Metal. By the second month we had our first drummer Christian, but he had to leave because he moved to another state. Our first concert was at The Pinch, a bar in DC, little by little we started getting more immersed in the music scene and started participating more in local shows. We then recruited Bryan, our lead guitarist.

We have opened stage to international bands like Leo Jimenez, Virginia Clemm, Mago de Oz, Saratoga, Dragonfly and Malón

Do your families live here in the U.S. or in your countries of origin?

We live here with our families, I’m married and live with my wife and kids and the other guys live with their families.

How does the cultural diversity of D.C. influences your music?

Our music has been really well accepted in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Our fans are Latinos and we also have American fans.

Tell us about your EP, when are you launching it?

We are working hard in order to get it launched by the end of this year, but we will launch our first single by June.

What motivates or inspires you to make your music?

Our music and lyrics are inspired by life itself. You know, things that happen everyday. How we are governed. We have a wide variety of lyrics, social issues, urban legends, real life cases, a particular character, etc.

What inspires you about Latin culture?

From Latin culture we get very inspired, for example, by legends, nature’s beauty and patrimony, traditions, food, etc.

What are the main challenges of playing Latin music in United States?

The challenges would be, in the first place, to get people to accept our music because we sing in Spanish, and sharing a stage with English speaking bands.

What opportunities does singing Latin music in United States bring you?

Lots of opportunities. Every time we play out friendship bonds get stronger. Every time we see new faces, we obtain a great satisfaction to see that our efforts are having results. Each new fan helps us grow stronger and to make better projects without losing our Latin roots.
