UPDATE #2: It’s getting closer to the moment of truth: Ismar and his competitors face off one last time in the Embassy Chef Challenge when the competition reconvenes for a March 14 gala. The chefs will compete to see who has the best regional hors d’oeuvres.
UPDATE #1: Washington Post food reporter Tim Carmen has a blog post on yesterday’s first round of the competition.
This weekend chef Ismar Reyes, who was featured in Hola Cultura’s webumentary, “El Arte de la Cocina/Kitchen Arts,” competes in the Embassy Chef Challenge, an annual competition of chefs and culinary traditions from around the world. Hola Cultura was alerted by la Embajada de El Salvador which sent us the following information:
[Q]uisiéramos informarle que este fin de semana se realizará el “Embassy Chef Challenge”, un evento organizado por Cultural Tourism DC. En este concurso estará representándonos el chef internacional Ismar Reyes, quien es salvadoreño y, además, único latinoamericano participando.
This year’s Embassy Chef Challenge begins Sunday, Feb. 10, with a private preliminary competition taking place “behind closed doors.” It’s the 5th annual challenge organized by Cultural Tourism DC and will culminate in a benefit gala on March 14th. Judges include the Post Carman and D.C.-based chef Carla Hall, co-host of ABC’s The Chew.
Ismar is the only Latin American chef in the competition. He’s up against chefs from eight other countries including Afghanistan, New Zealand and Jamaica. Go Ismar! We’re rooting for you!
