On January 24, the spring semester of our Storytelling Program for Experiential Learning began. For the next three months, a dozen D.C. high school students will work alongside college students to learn the journalism process as we carry out interviews with local artists and community members and launch a new investigative reporting project.
The program, which meets every Tuesday via Zoom, is a multigenerational and multicultural story lab. SPEL brings together youth and young adults looking to assist and inform the community while improving their own skills. This spring, we have interns from the District’s Calvin Coolidge Senior High School and Capital City Public Charter School. They’ll work closely with college interns from around the country, including California, New Mexico and Florida.
This semester we have five teams including storytellers focusing on three broad topics: Latino Arts and Humanities, the Afro-Latino Experience and Society and Culture. SPEL also has a Design and Social Media team that shares our stories through our social media platforms. Since January, SPEL has its own copyediting group that will assist with the process of publishing stories created by other SPEL participants.
Hola Cultura’s SPEL program provides young students from around the country with experience in journalism, leadership, communication, and many more professional skills. Our interns gain valuable knowledge by attending weekly workshops and hands-on work sessions. Best of all, by the end of the semester they may even have some published work to add to their resumes.
The SPEL program recruits in the spring, summer and fall each year. Although recruitment for this semester is closed, we’ll start accepting applications for the summer semester soon. Save the dates: May 30 to July 25, 2023.
