Oye, dude, que es ‘el espanglish?’
For Hola Cultura’s first online debate, timed to coincide with Gala Hispanic Theater’s weekend of comic cinema greats Tin Tan and Cantinflas, we pose the questions: What is Spanglish and where did it come from? >>> Paralelamente a la muestra de cine comico en el teatro Gala este fin de semana, Hola Cultura convoca a la comunidad latina en general al primer debate en línea: El Spanglish. Troca, rufa, lunchear. ¿Lo habla usted en casa con su familia? ¿Qué estamos haciendo cuando mezclamos dos idiomas? ¿Es verdad lo que afirman los miembros de la academia española, de que el spanglish es un forma de hablar contaminada, un sub-lenguaje, una perversión del idioma? ¿Por qué a los académicos y puristas de ambos idiomas les disgusta tanto? ¿Cuáles son sus palabras favoritas en Spanglish? ¿Será el spanglish el idioma del futuro en los Estados Unidos?

>>>Hola Cultural contributor Octavio Lasane, argues in this post, that the Mexican comic actor of the 1950s, Tin Tan, is the godfather of Spanglish. Lasane’s point of view is that the origins of Splanglish can be found at the U.S.-Mexican border, where people, including Tin Tan who hails from northern Mexico, grew up speaking both English and Spanish and mixing the two came naturally and without effort. Do you agree? Do you have another theory?
