This Friday night at GALA Hispanic Theatre, the award-winning youth theater group Paso Nuevo presents: “Roots / Raíces,” a collage of poems, monologues and scenes that explore “the pride and struggle of Latinos to belong in the United States.”
The performance caps months of work by the GALA youth educational program run by D.C. poet and performer Quique Avíles. These original pieces, performed in English and Spanish and containing strong language, were developed by troupe members and directed by Avíles, Matthew Vaky and Alina Collins. The evening will also feature the local multilingual musical group, The Tetra Boys, representing the Student Multiethnic Action Research Team (SMART) of Many Languages One Voice.
The performance is free though you can always make a donation to the group, which was honored at the White House last year by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.
