To everyone who has supported our 12th anniversary fundraiser, we send our gratitude and appreciation.
Last Thursday’s fundraiser at The Festival Center in Adams Morgan was a fun time that featured wonderful local art, great conversations and delicious food – all with a focus on Hola Cultura’s work, up to now and yet ahead.
It was great to see so many new and old friends, including five of the artists from our “Artistas in the Capital” podcast. The artistry of Armando Lopez-Bircann, Julio Valdez, Marta Pérez-García, Stephanie Mercedes and the team from Corazón Folklórico DC made the event truly unique. Thanks as well to Yolanda Alcorta, cofounder of Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas, and Raíces artist-in-residence Rafael Jiménez López, who created a beautiful ofrenda that welcomed people as they arrived.
Also contributing to the night’s specialness was the book raffle featuring Latino authors, including our board president, Alberto Roblest. Thanks to Alberto and the national publishing house Arte Público Press for donating the books. Of course, there were delicious tamales! And we finished up with a mouthwatering tres leches cake made by our dear friend, the D.C. artist and accomplished chef Carmen Torruela Quander.
Above all, thank you to everyone who came out or gave online! Through your generosity, we’ve raised nearly half of our goal. We are honored and humbled by each one. Thank you!
As Hola Cultura’s core community, we want you to know that when you give, you supply us with encouragement and motivation too. The Nov. 9 event was an opportunity to reflect on 12 years of Hola Cultura storytelling – and our continuous work on storycraft: the story as interview, webumentary and podcast, or sometimes as a guided tour, a festival, a culinary celebration or an online map. We’ve accomplished a lot for a little organization and have big plans for the future that we invite you to be a part of.
There’s still time to give. We’re going to keep working toward raising $5,000 in individual donations by the end of the year. If you haven’t given yet, please consider joining the Hola Cultura community in supporting our mission of celebrating Latino arts and community and debunking harmful stereotypes. Donate today.
