A community forms in the ’40s and ’50s amid rising tensions in Washington’s black and white worlds.

ONE NIGHT ONLY!
ONE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THIS WORK IN PROGRESS. Watch 30-minutes of original footage before it’s edited down for the web.

A first look at A Village Apart//una villa aparte

OnLineSerie2BWatch the first iteration of El Barrio, Hola Cultura’s new web series on D.C.’s Latino history. The 30-minute program traces the early stirrings of a “Latin American Village,” sharing the recollections stories of Washington natives and long-time residents.

Latin American countries opened new embassies along 16th Street after World War II, bringing along cooks, maids, seamstresses and chauffeurs, as well as ambassadors. Some embassy staff stayed on and settled, working as waiters and busboys. This tiny but growing community came together on Sunday afternoons and at house parties, where the same bellboys and cooks played mambo and salsa—presiding over dancing that sometimes went on till dawn.

Watch the webisode spanning the 1940s through late 1960s. Then join the open discussion. Refreshments served.  See you there!
