Join us this fall for our next semester of the Storytelling Program for Experiential Learning (SPEL)! Hola Cultura recruitment has begun for high school and college students.

The fall semester will run from Tuesday, September 19 to Tuesday, December 5.

Gain an understanding of the media industry and opportunities to publish your work in a fast-paced and team-focused environment. Put your interviewing skills into practice while working in a team that shares your interests. Hola Cultura’s SPEL storytelling program gives teenagers and young adults hands-on experience in journalism.

If selected, you’ll attend virtual workshops and work sessions every Tuesday evening via Zoom and work with a team of interns led by an editorial fellow who will provide mentorship and feedback. You will also broaden your horizons and deepen your career savvy by talking to guest speakers from the professional world who provide career advice and insights.

“I loved learning the intricacies of producing a podcast. I am also very grateful for the constructive criticism on my researching tactics,” says an intern of our fall 2022 semester on the intern and fellow feedback.

Working in the journalism field can involve more than writing. In addition to editorial internships focused on interviewing and producing new articles and podcasts, the SPEL program offers positions in copy editing and social media management, where you can gain work experience that will prepare you for jobs in the communication field.

The SPEL program allows interns to interview and share the stories of Latino artists and organizations that influence the D.C. community. Our program will help you develop story ideas, contact the artists you want to interview, pitch your own stories related to D.C. Latino arts and humanities, as well as social and environmental justice and more!

“This experience has definitely helped me reinvigorate my Spanish speaking skills, as it is my second language. I also feel that I’ve been able to see journalism more from an audience perspective, which has benefited my work,” says an intern from the fall 2021 semester.

Do you want to get a sense of how the communications industry works and gain valuable skills such as time management, storytelling, collaboration, critical thinking and fact-checking while expanding your writing skills? In that case, a fall 2023 SPEL internship position is a great place to start.

“My favorite part of being in Hola Cultura is to learn from professionals how to write in English and learn English grammar,” says one 2023 summer intern. “I learned a lot.”

Visit the SPEL page to learn more about the program. High School students can apply using our online application form, available in English and Spanish. College students and young adult volunteers can view open opportunities on the Work with Us page. Please send us your resume, cover letter and work samples to volunteers@holacultura.com.
