The Washington Post has a story on a new program aimed at better marking the path to higher education for Montgomery County Public Schools grads who usually don’t make it into college. The story profiles Nadia Salazar, a Bolivian immigrant, who took advantage of mentoring and other assistance to earn a spot at Montgomery College this fall. If she earns an associates degree there, she’ll have the option for completing a four-year education at any of several Maryland state universities. The Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success program targets groups, including Hispanics, who have lower than average college enrollment rates. There’s a similar program in Northern Virginia, the story says.
