In honor of our web-doc “Muralism DC,” the webumentary premiering Friday, here’s some of the standout street art on display in Naples, Italy.
Artwork + graffiti on ancient buildings may be jarring at times but also seems fitting when you consider that Naples is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. If you are asking, ‘what does this have to do with Latinidad or Hispanic-ness’, would it surprise you to hear that Naples was once a Spanish colony? In fact, it was under the Spanish were subduing “the New World.”
While wandering around the old city center tonight, I happened upon what seems like the work of several different accomplished street artists with very different styles.
Of course this work is completely unsanctioned — sort of like the anarchist cousins of officially selected and curated street murals like the ones around the District that we feature in our webumentary. Still funky street art on ancient buildings in a city known for its edgy-cool seems to make the place even more … edgy-cool. This last one is my favorite.
Which do you prefer?
