With oral history listening stations inside and history bingo and other activities on the front lawn, community members came together last Saturday for the Sidewalk Stories Listening Party at the East Boston branch of the Boston Public Library.

The three audio recordings created by Hola Cultura based on historic and recent oral history recordings and a charming short video produced by Zumix compose the East Boston Sidewalk Stories series. The project, spearheaded by the Boston Research Center with the support of a grant from the Mellon Foundation, elevates local histories using insights and recollections directly from neighborhood residents.
Visitors strolling the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway on Saturday got to preview the stories using a scannable QR code on posters stationed along the path. By scanning a QC code, passersby could use their phones to listen. Those posters were designed by Boston Triennial Artist Gabriel Sosa and MLCS.

For the listening party, Hola Cultura’s summer intern team created a special bingo game inspired by East Boston’s rich and quirky history. We enjoyed playing it with friends from Maverick Landing Community Services, which also created keychains featuring the Sidewalk Stories logo created by Iris Lopez, a former Hola Cultura intern.
Next, the programs will be deployed strategically around the neighborhood. But no need to wait! These programs are available now on our Sidewalk Stories page and at Our Home: An East Boston History Portal.
