East Boston: A neighborhood under siege

Sidewalk Stories: Voices from East Boston graphic, “A Neighborhood Under Seige"

Did you know East Boston could have been completely wiped off the map in the 1970s to make room for a larger airport?

Today, we share the second audio program from our “Sidewalk Stories” series, made in partnership with the Boston Research Center (BRC). In this 5-minute compilation of interviews with residents throughout the years, hear about how neighbors banded together to push back against the expansion of Logan International Airport decades ago, and continue supporting and advocating for their neighborhood and its diverse people to this day.

In this program, hear from Eva Biscegli, Renée Loth, Chris Marchi, Liliana Tirado Arteaga and Kannan Thiruvengadam.

Funded by the Mellon Foundation and led by the Boston Research Center, “Sidewalk Stories” aims to promote greater understanding of Boston’s spatial, environmental and cultural history.  Project partners also include Zumix, Maverick Landing Community Services and the East Boston Social Centers. The entire “Sidewalk Stories” collection will soon be available on the BRC’s Our Home: An East Boston History Portal.

Want to hear more? Look out for “The voice above the roar,” the final installment of Hola Cultura’s “Sidewalk Stories” next Wednesday! And, if you haven’t already, check out the first program, “Everybody Wants a Piece of East Boston.”
