“Monsenor: The Last Journey of Óscar Romero”

Ana Carrigan and Juliet Weber co-direct this documentary about Óscar Arnulfo Romero, the legendary Archbishop of San Salvador, who stood up to El Salvador’s brutal military junta, only to be assassinated in 1980 while celebrating mass.  Filmed in Spanish with English subtitles, Mexican journalist/critic Alma Guillermoprieto described the 2011 documentary as “an astonishing compilation.” The screening is co-sponsored by the Smithsonian Latino Center and American University, and will be followed by a brief discussion about Oscar Romero. Admittance is free but requires an RSVP.
