Se acreditan los inventos del helicóptero, el submarino y el automóvil a Leonardo Da Vinci, además claro, el de la bicicleta. Novedoso vehículo de transportación que no ha pasado de moda, aunque por supuesto se ha modificado en diseño, tamaño, en usos, y en costumbres. La bicicleta hoy por hoy, es una de las formas más interesantes de transportarnos de un lado a otro, no sólo en las ciudades, sino en el mundo entero, y nos ayuda a quemar calorías, respirar aire puro y lo más importante, ahorrar energía y salvar un poco del oxígeno qué queda en el planeta.
La bicicleta, es también una pieza de arte, como en el caso de la magnánima instalación del artista mexicano Gilberto Aceves Navarro que se presenta en el patio del edificio Ronald Reagan – International Trade Center en Downtown. Aceves Navarro, es un importante artista mexicano que se caracteriza por piezas de corte optimista, figurativo y donde los colores imperan.
Elaboradas en metal, estás “biclas”, no sólo son un homenaje a este inventivo sistema de locomoción, sino una celebración al tiempo. Algunas personas celebran su cumpleaños con una gran fiesta, o un viaje en crucero. El autor de esta obra, prefirió realizar 83 esculturas, una por cada año de su vida, y en lugar de celebrar con un grupo selecto de amigos, como muchos de nosotros hubiéramos preferido, decidió hacerlo con todos los visitantes de esta instalación temporal que primero se estrenó en la Ciudad de México, luego en NY y ahora puede verse en Washington DC para deleite de todos los transeúntes.
En colores rojos, blancos, naranjas y algunas en negro, estas bicicletas son obras simpáticas y casi juguetonas, las cuales bien podrían ser dibujos en tercera dimensión de diferentes personas montando bicicleta de un lado a otro de una ciudad imaginaria llamada arte, donde estos personajes pedalean a mil por hora, o lentamente a diferentes velocidades, según se observa y captura en los cuerpos de sus conductores. Ciclistas y bicicletas, simbiosis natural de este medio de transporte y diversión, bueno para la salud, el espíritu y el medio ambiente.
Pieza de arte público que invita a pedalear bajo el sol y sobre la lluvia, rumbo al trabajo, la cita de amor y hacia el futuro. Se estima qué más de varios millones de personas utilizan este medio de transporte día con día de un lado al otro del orbe, y es sin duda, una manera práctica de ahorrarnos, no sólo el costo, sino la inutilidad e inoperancia de los servicios del metro de nuestra ciudad.

Inventions atributed to Leonardo Da Vinci include the helicopter, the submarine, the automobile, and, of course, the bicycle. The bike– a mode of transportation that never goes out of style though it’s gone through countless modifications in design, size, use, and customs.
The bike today, is still one of the most interesting ways to get from one place to another, not only in cities but in the whole world. It helps us burn calories, breathe fresh air, and most importantly, saves energy and doesn’t pollute the environment.
In the case of the magnanimous installation by Mexican artist Gilberto Aceves Navarro, the bike is also a piece of art. With the bicycle installations, up now in the courtyard of the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center in downtown Washington, Aceves Navarro uses this everyday, familiar form to characterize figurative optimistic pieces, where colors prevail.
Elaborated in metal, these “biclas,” as they might be casually called in Mexico, are not only a tribute to this inventive system of locomotion, but a celebration of time. Some people celebrate their birthday with a big party or a cruise. The author of this work, who happens to be an important Mexican artist, preferred to make 83 sculptures, one for each year of his life. Instead of partying with a select group of friends, as many of us would do, he decided to share his celebration with every visitor to this temporary installation, which first premiered in Mexico City, followed by a stint in New York City, and now in Washington D.C.–to the delight of passersbys.
In red, white, orange, and a touch of black, these bikes are nice and almost playful works of art. They could well be three-dimensional drawings of people riding bikes side-by-side in an imaginary city called ART, where these characters pedal a mile a minute or amble at different rates of speed. Cyclists and bicycles, a natural symbiosis of this transport and fun–good for health, the spirit and the environment.
This public art piece invites you to pedal under the sun and rain, heading to work, a romantic rendezvous, or into the future. Why else would millions of people use this means of transportation every day around the globe, from side of the world to the other? Not to mention, in Washington D.C., it is certainly a practical way to save not only money, but the time and frustration involved with using our Metro system.
