Artist Joan Belmar is finally exhibiting his series of paintings titled “America,” made as a young, recently arrived artist fleeing his native Chile.
The Washington Post has a story today discussing why Belmar held off on publicly debuting the work, which includes a tribute to Victor Jara, the famous singer executed in Chile’s 1973 U.S.-backed coup, as well as paintings about the “travel, exile and rootlessness” of life outside one’s homeland.
The “America” series, shown with Belmar’s more recent “Tierra del Fuego” paintings, opens this weekend and runs through Nov. 25, at the Charles Krause/Reporting Fine Art gallery on 13th Street NW.
